Grow your Own

Project title: Grow your Own: Hydroponic Gardening for Sustainable Agriculture, A STEM Education
Project for the Community

Main STEM fields of focus: Environmental Science, Biology, Engineering and Mathematics

The project aims to promote STEM education by introducing students to the science of hydroponics
and the engineering principles behind the building of the hydroponic system.

Through Grow Your Own the students will have the opportunity to learn about the technology
involved in monitoring and maintaining the hydroponic system (designed and built by them, using
readily-available materials), develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills and creativity.

In this manner, students will have a direct, hands-on experience in designing, as well as operating, a
hydroponic system. The group type involved will be composed of 6-12 year olds.

The school believes that this project will not only enhance the students’ knowledge and skills in
STEM subjects but also foster a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness. Grow Your
Own is intended to introduce hydroponics as part of the school’s mid-day break curriculum.

Moreover, Grow Your Own aims to promote sustainable agriculture in the community by virtue of
making use of these gardening techniques, which are seen as promoting a minimisation of waste
and environmental impact, as well as water conservation. In fact, the project will be open to
everyone in the area, such as students, teachers, farmers, and people who live nearby.

The main deliverable of the project will be an online toolkit, thus making it a possibility for any other
member of the community to build their own hydroponic system.

Note: Hydroponic gardening is a soilless method of growing plants using nutrient-rich water
solutions, providing plants with the necessary nutrients required for growth.
