Animal Facts: Meerkats

steamalert fact 1
  • Meerkats are squirrel-sized animals that live in groups ranging from 3 to 50 members.
  • A group of Meerkats is called a Mob. All members of the mob actively gather food and nurture their young. While the rest of the mob search for food, one (or more) meerkats, called a sentry, walks towards a high point, like a termite mound, and perched on its back legs. From here it scans the surrounding environment for predators like eagles and hawks.
  • When sensing danger, a sentry lets out a high-pitched squeal, alerting and sending the rest of the meerkats to a safe place.
