Life Form That Could Reveal The Origins of Complex Life

life-form Weekly Life Form: The Origins of Complex Life

  • In 2010, a group of scientists ran DNA analysis on a sediment core that was taken from the floor of the Arctic Ocean. They found a previously unknown organism belonging to the strange domain of microbes called Archaea.Lokiarchaeota is the name given to their new discovery, after the Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent near Greenland, where it was originally found.
  • It took over 5 years to understand how Lokiarchaeota behaves.
  • Common bacterial populations take around half an hour to double but Lokiarchaeota takes 20 days.
  • The experiment was concluded after over 12 years.
