Xjenza Malta and Esplora marked International Women’s Day with a special event featuring Acting President, Her Excellency, Dr Helena Dalli in discussions with several students.

H.E. Dr Dalli highlighted that nearly a quarter of Maltese girls aged between 16 and 19 are are writing code, placing Malta well above the EU average. She described this not merely as a statistical milestone, but as evidence of a meaningful shift, one where girls are actively shaping the digital world rather than simply consuming it.

Reflecting on the event, H.E. Dr Dalli said the session provided a valuable opportunity for open dialogue. “I engaged directly with students, shared perspectives on today’s digital landscape, and responded to their questions and ideas” said H. E. Dr Dalli.

She added that it was inspiring to hear how young girls experience technology and how they envision their future within Malta’s expanding digital and innovation ecosystem.

She also recalled that 11 years ago Malta steered the process in the UN leading to the proclamation of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science.

Claudette Abela Baldacchino, Director Outreach and Public Engagement at Xjenza Malta said that this session was another opportunity for students visiting Esplora to take part in an open discussion about subjects that directly impact our daily lives.

She explained that, as part of its corporate social responsibility, Xjenza Malta has developed a comprehensive programme of activities to mark important dates in the calendar.

International Women’s Day is one of these occasions.

“We believe that Women’s Day should provide us with the opportunity to discuss not only the achievements we have made over the years, including in the fields of science, but also to create space to reflect on where we are heading — with open doors to ensure that the sector is accessible to everyone, especially girls and women.”
