Xjenza Malta’s Esplora celebrates Triple Recognition at the Inaugural Malta Tourism Awards

Esplora, Xjenza Malta’s flagship Interactive Science Centre, has been honoured with three major accolades at the first edition of the Malta Tourism Awards held on 29 April 2025. This national recognition highlights the Agency’s contribution to, and growing impact on sustainable tourism, innovation and professional development within the visitor attraction sector.

At the ceremony, Xjenza Malta was awarded:

These honours, at the first-ever Malta Tourism Awards, underscore the growing synergy between science communication and tourism. Another first was established in a science-focused institution achieving such distinction in Malta’s tourism sector, demonstrating that engaging educational attractions can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with traditional tourism offerings. Xjenza Malta’s success also aligns with the national goals of promoting innovation and sustainability in tourism, as championed by the Malta Tourism Authority through these awards. “We are truly honoured by this triple recognition,” said Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta. “Our mission has always been to bring science closer to people in fun and meaningful ways. Receiving these awards at a national tourism forum is a testament to our team’s dedication and the innovative spirit behind our initiatives. We believe this achievement shows that science and tourism together can create unique experiences that benefit both locals and visitors. It inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of public engagement and sustainable tourism in Malta.”

Accepting the awards at the ceremony, Esplora’s Director, Mr James Catania, stated, “These awards are not just commendations; they confirm that the renewed direction of Xjenza Malta and Esplora, underpinned by strategic government investment and focused leadership, is delivering measurable national outcomes. I am immensely proud of the team’s achievement, which speaks to the calibre and dedication of our people.”

Xjenza Malta’s triple win in the awards’ first edition highlights the broad appeal and impact of its work, bridging the gap between scientific innovation and cultural tourism. Xjenza Malta is the Government Agency responsible for promoting and coordinating scientific research, technological innovation, space and science communication in Malta. The Esplora Interactive Science Centre, operated by Xjenza Malta, is one of Malta’s leading cultural and educational destinations. Combining hands-on exhibits, immersive experiences and a commitment to accessible science communication, Esplora continues to inspire thousands of visitors each year, from families and schools to international guests, as a beacon of informal learning and innovation. Its growing role in Malta’s tourism landscape demonstrates how science can engage, educate and enrich the visitor experience, adding value and diversity to the Maltese islands as a destination.
