D.I.C.E.

Project title: D.I.C.E. – Design, Innovate & Connect Efficiently
Main STEM field of focus: Environmental Science

The rationale behind D.I.C.E. is to engage and connect the Gozitan community to spearhead
innovative designs related to everyday problems encountered in the built environment.

Through this project, participants will have the opportunity to explore ways and means to
modernise local buildings (new or retrofit) through hands-on workshops. This contributes to
one of the key priorities of the European Green Deal – to aid in the transition to net zero by 2050.

This also adheres to the Malta Long-Term Renovation Strategy.

D.I.C.E. aims to organise a series of 16 STEM workshops focusing on environmental science. The
workshops will delve into four key themes: maximising heat efficiency, exploring renewable
energy sources, addressing waste management and promoting accessible clean energy
solutions.

During these workshops, participants will have the opportunity to achieve various objectives.
These include gaining an understanding of sustainable cities and communities, constructing
basic models related to industrial innovation and infrastructure, fostering collaboration to tackle
climate-related challenges and enhancing skills in group work and effective communication.

The workshops will be targeting different audiences, such as grandparents/parents/guardians
and early-years students, grandparents/parents/guardians and junior years students, secondary
students, and higher secondary students.

They will kick start with a discussion related to any of the four themes mentioned
above. Following this, participants will proceed with the designing of a model in order to
understand how the chosen theme of focus contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Namely: SDG01 Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG09 Industry Innovation and Infrastructure,
SDG11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG13 Climate Action.

Participants will be working alongside a female engineer and scientist, which will further help
cultivate their STEM identities.

D.I.C.E. embraces an inclusive approach, enabling grandparents, parents, and guardians to
engage alongside their children in high-quality STEM workshops. These workshops are
designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or any other
elements of diversity.

The results of the questionnaires and the way forward will be discussed during a conference
post-project.
