Thank you so much for joining us at Esperimenta Tikka Xjenza! We hope you enjoyed the evening and we hope to see you again at our next community festival!
We would also like to thank all those attendees and external stakeholders who provided their constructive feedback via an online survey. The main data results and conclusions drawn from such responses can be found in the festival’s evaluation report which can be accessed here.

When: Saturday 23 July 2022, 6pm – 10.30pm
Where: Couvre Porte | Birgu (Vittoriosa)
What: A fun-filled science outreach event in the community for the community
We are delighted to announce that on 23 July 2022 Esplora Interactive Science Centre will be delivering science to the community … in a slightly different setting!
Whether you are strolling along the Isla or Bormla ‘Xatt’, or coming from the Birgu waterfront, follow Triq 8 ta’ Diċembru up towards Birgu and Kalkara and there you will find us.
From 6pm onwards, the historical Birgu Couvre Porte will don the Esplora colours and welcome you to a free tour of everything Esplora does best: science shows, games, tinkering, STEAM performances, storytelling and more.
Esperimenta Tikka Xjenza is the first in what we hope will become a roaming festival set in the Three Cities of Cottonera and Kalkara.
The aim of this intimate celebration is simply that of further highlighting that science is all around us, and of course that science is fun and accessible to all.
This first edition will focus on the theme of Environmental Sustainability for Wellbeing.
The event, organised under the auspices of the STEM Engagement Working Group and with the support of the Birgu Local Council, will cater for all ages and will be free of charge.
And when you arrive … what will you find?
… A place where you can enjoy a creative tinkering session!
… An area where you get to have a chat with some lovely individuals and hear all kinds of wonderful and marvellous things such as: how to spot seabirds or how to rear shark pups … finding out why Posidonia is such an important habitat … how everyone impacts the environment around them and how technology can be used to turn this impact into a positive one. Here you will meet some of our friends from BirdLife Malta, Sharklab, Ambjent Malta, University of Malta Faculty of Engineering, Jaye and Atelier Manuel!
… An opportunity to play with a ‘human tower’, by interacting with a gorgeous collection of wooden games coming all the way from Barcelona.
… A mini, animated climate film shown in the lovely little Birgu Public Library, about how one person can make the world greener and fairer.
… Engage with a living “book”, and share experiences on how changes in the environment affected your life, in a Human Library! Participants in this section include Earth Systems – University of Malta, Friends of the Earth, Għaqda Trobbija tan-Naħal u Għasel Malti, Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights – Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, ESA Earth Systems Association, Biome Munch, Żibel and Bio Aqua Garden. Human Library will be present between 18.30 and 19.30 and between 20.00 and 21.00.
In the performance area, you can then sit down and enjoy:
… A science show involving different Esplora signature experiments.
… A dance performance by Moveo where the movements of the dancers aim to convey that, among other things, everyone has the power to make a difference, no matter how small.
… An immersive theatre performance by Studio 18, which walks you through a strange predicament, Jimmy and his friends, have found themselves in.
If you go down to the Birgu Ditch (Foss), you will come upon a magical storytelling activity around the theme of cleaning up our seas by removing plastic bags like Stanley!
Please note that the story is aimed at children aged 3 to 6 years. There will be four sessions in all at: 6.00 pm (English); 6.30 pm (Maltese); 7.00 pm (English), 8.30 pm (Maltese).
Seating in our magical tent is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend that you obtain a tag from the event’s main reception in order to secure your place for one of the sessions.
And how about a bit of busking in between or along the way?
So please do keep checking this page or the Facebook Event Page as time goes by!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The whole Festival is free of charge. The pre-booking of seats for the Science Show, Dance Performance and Theatre Performance is now closed. However on the day there will be some seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
We look forward to welcoming you to this celebration of science in the community, where this time round Esplora comes to you!
