The Ecsite Conference is coming to Malta next week and will be held between the 14th and 17th of June. Ecsite is a European network of science centres and museums. The conference is the most prominent meeting of science engagement professionals in Europe and promises to bring together over 900 science professionals from all over the world.
This year Ecsite will be hosted by Esplora Interactive Science Centre and will take place at locations across Valletta and Kalkara including the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Malta is an ideal location for the Ecsite Conference as it combines a vibrant scientific scene with a rich history and cultural heritage and a commitment to sustainable development.
Ecsite is a dynamic community of over 350 organisations that are committed to inspire people with science and share a passion for making it more accessible, interactive, and engaging for all ages and backgrounds. The conference is an annual event aimed at promoting science education, fostering collaboration between science professionals, and sharing the best practices in science communication. One of the primary goals is to provide a platform where to exchange knowledge and ideas.
The Ecsite Conference features over 80 sessions including keynote addresses, talks, workshops, showcase and networking events, all with the intention to give attendees the opportunity to discuss emerging trends, share experiences, learn from one another, make valuable connections, and gather insights that can help them improve their work in the scientific communication field. It also promotes collaboration between science organisations, allowing them to identify new opportunities and partnerships and explore innovative approaches to science communication. A Business Bistro will be set up throughout the Conference, with 41 exhibitors presenting their most recent products and services.
Three years ago, Malta submitted a bid to host the Ecsite Conference through Esplora Interactive Science Centre. The fact that Esplora was selected to host the conference is a great honour for Malta and a significant achievement for the science centre. Esplora has put a lot of effort into hosting such a significant event over the last two years. Highlights of the well-organised schedule include the Speakers Reception on Wednesday at the Muża National Museum of Arts, the Gala Dinner and Mariano Gago Ecsite Award Ceremony on Thursday at Villa Bighi and the Nocturne on Friday held at Esplora Interactive Science Centre.
Esplora will have the chance to highlight some of its programmes during Nocturne, including a great science show, Science on Fire and workshops like Chain Reaction and Unlocking AI. Esplora will also provide a planetarium experience, where attendees can take part in live shows, Planetarium films and other activities. A site-specific dance performance, the Ecsite Jazz Band, a silent disco and karaoke will all be available as additional kinds of entertainment during the event.
As part of the conference, local designer James Dimech, will showcase his collection of wearable arts made from recycled material. Attendees will be able to marvel at the stunning pieces James has created. One dress is made entirely out of paper, taking recycling to a whole new level. Another piece is constructed from metal, and there is also a dress created through the use of plastic. James will also be presenting a session on the process involved in creating these unique garments.
An exciting local project being sponsored by Ecsite this year is SIKKA – an Artificial Reef Project by Żibel, a non-profit Maltese organisation. The project aims to bring artificial reefs made by 3D printing to Malta’s waters. This effort will support the local ecosystem by providing a much-needed home for marine life.
The opening ceremony of the Ecsite Conference will take place on Thursday at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. It will be attended by high level people including Hon. Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Dr Tonio Portughese, Chairman of the Malta Council for Science and Technology, Bruno Maquart, President of Ecsite and Catherine Franche, Executive Director of Ecsite.
The Ecsite Conference is a celebration of creativity, collaboration and an opportunity to network, learn and have fun. We welcome all participants to Malta and hope they will enjoy the warm hospitality and the natural beauty of our islands.
During the closing ceremony, Malta will pass on the event to Slovenia, who will host it next year. This is a great opportunity for Malta to showcase its science communication expertise to an international audience and to establish new partnerships with other science centres, museums and organisations.
The Ecsite Conference is not open for the public. Kindly note that Esplora Interactive Science Centre will be closed for visitors from Saturday 10th June until Sunday 18th June 2023. The science centre will be open and welcoming visitors once again on Tuesday 20th June 2023.
