Best STEAM Project Award 2021 (People’s Choice)

This Award has been designed to encourage, honour, and promote excellence in projects marrying STEM subjects and the Arts.

This Award differs from the other awards in that the evaluation panel shortlisted three projects among the excellent projects that were nominated. These three projects are now being submitted for public voting.

The Award Panel would like to thank all nominees for participating and for promoting STEM via their inspiring projects. All nominees will be acknowledged on Esplora’s website once the entire evaluation procedure is complete.

The below are the projects selected for public voting.

Science in the City (SitC)

Science in the City is Malta’s national science and arts festival.  SitC centers on how important science and research are in everyday life and in active responsible citizenship in a world which is undergoing monumental changes, especially to its environment and health.  During SitC, researchers and performers take centre stage, filling Valletta with the wonders of science that have contributed to the understanding and shaping of our society.

As a result of SitC a platform is thus provided for various groups originating from diverse specific sectors to meet and engage with each other. In this manner researchers and artists collaborate and get creative, while visitors are invited to engage with scientists, researchers, artists and performers.

Diversely Typical

Diversely Typical is a contemporary dance performance by Moveo Dance Company, which shines a light on neurodiversity.  Aimed at children between 9 and 15, Diversely Typical has been choreographed to highlight every behavioural nuance of certain neurological disorders.  Via the medium of dance the natural variation in human genes known as neurodiversity and which results in conditions such as Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) among others, is thus explored and represented.

Tolerance is promoted along with an urging of the embracement of the concept of neurodiversity, rather than the belief that neuro-atypical people need to be ‘cured’.

STEAM Summer School

STEAM Summer School, initially an ERASMUS+ funded project, was started with a view to train higher education students, researchers, other science communication professionals and educators in science communication and public engagement theory and skills, implementing an approach that integrates the arts throughout the whole programme.

To this end, the intensive science communication training aspect at the heart of this project incorporated several artistic fields: Science theatre, Improvisation Theatre techniques, Public speaking and performance skills and stand-up comedy. Students were trained in the latest science communication theories (from economic, psychologic and communication scholarly fields) to communicate all STEM subjects. The alumni subsequently created activities that ranged from puppet theatre to interactive games, from art installations to dance.

The approach of STEAM Summer School was not to see STEM and the arts as something separate but to incorporate these different ways of learning and knowledge generation together, holistically.
