How to make your own Rain Gauge

In the new season of Ġina u l-Esploraturi, Des is a new Esploratur who will help you explore science, the weather and everything that makes our world so phenomenal! In the 3rd Episode Des will show you how to create a Rain Gauge. Check out the instructions below and try it out at home!

Materials needed

Adult supervision is recommended.

Instructions:

Step 1  Remove all the labels from the water bottle. Using the scissors, cut off the top part of the bottle and put it aside for later. If the bottle has a curvy part, eliminate it and save the bottom and top-most parts.

Step 2 Attach the ruler to the bottom part of the bottle using tape or glue. Attach it a couple of centimetres higher than the bottle’s bottom.

Step 3 Place the rocks in the bottle to serve as a weight for stability.

Step 4 Fill in the bottle with water up until the 0 (zero) mark on the ruler. If you want, you can add a few drops of food colouring to the water to see the level better.

Step 5 Place the top part of the bottle upside down into the rain gauge. This will act as a funnel and catch the rainwater. Don’t forget to remove the cap 😉.

Step 6 Place the rain gauge in an outdoor space and wait for a rainy day to check how much it has rained.
