Da Vinci at Esplora 2019

Da Vinci at Esplora

Who was Leonardo da Vinci? What did he discover? A true genius, an artist, an engineer, an architect, a sculptor, and an anatomist. In other words, a remarkable all-rounder.

Join us as we celebrate the life and work of Leonardo, on the 500th anniversary of his death. Participate in hands-on activities, design and make your own creations and use augmented and virtual reality to take a closer look at Da Vinci’s inventions.

Workshops:

Maker Space: Cardboard Automata workshop (7+)

Join us for a playful and inventive activity and create a mechanical sculpture to explore levers, cams, linkages and other mechanisms. Work with simple materials and make your art piece as complex as you want!

Maker Space: Build your own cardboard inventions (5+)

Oh no! You’re stranded on a deserted island and all you have available is some cardboard and a Makedo Kit! Use your problem-solving skills and imagination to design and make a flying or floating machine to get you and your friends off the island.

Building with Lego WeDo (5+)

It’s LEGO time! Let your imagination run wild and bring your ideas to life by using a LEGO WeDo construction set. Use a motor to add motion to your invention and discover how different gears can be used to create simple, yet amazing machines.

Shadow Play (5+)

Did you know that Leonardo Da Vinci studied light and shadows to create remarkable works of art such as The Last Supper?

Now’s YOUR chance to explore the science of light through a series of hands-on activities! Make coloured shadows, explore how light interacts with different objects and discover the relationship between lights, colours and shadows.

VR / AR experience

Are you ready to go on a virtual journey back in time to the renaissance period? Use virtual and augmented reality and take a closer look at some of Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous designs. Learn about his passion for aviation and explore in more detail his self-propelled cart and armored tank.

Art in Motion: The Da Vinci Edition

Join us in the art lab and meet the artists from @Bejta Artisans who are creatively combining art and science to create beautiful art in motion! Test out the Da Vinci flying machine or parachute to check if his designs actually work. Be mesmerized by the giant sand pendulum, create your own heliograph design and use a zoetrope, an early form of motion picture projector, to make your designs come to life.

Carnival Float

A carnival float is the perfect example of how engineering and creativity can come together to produce an amazing work of art. It requires months of brainstorming to create the theme, the internal metal frames, the mechanisms, the clay molds, the fiberglass cover and the papier-mâché details.

Make sure to drop by Esplora to see a fantastic carnival float which was designed and built by Coleiro Carnival Co (who have over 50 years of float building experience!)
