Esplora Interactive Science Centre celebrated its 10th anniversary with an official ceremony at Villa Bighi, marking a decade of science engagement, education and public participation in Malta.
The event, held on 1 September, brought together Government representatives, Xjenza Malta, current and former Esplora employees, educators, researchers, partners and collaborators who have contributed to the Centre’s development since it opened its doors in 2016.
Opening the celebration, Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima highlighted Esplora’s role in advancing Malta’s ambitions in education, research, innovation and human capital, while preparing future generations to meet a changing world.
Over its first decade, Esplora has established its role as Malta’s national interactive science centre, reaching children, schools, educators and families.
As it enters its second decade, Esplora will place greater emphasis on STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics—recognising the importance of combining scientific knowledge with creativity, design, communication, critical thinking and collaboration.
Xjenza Malta Chief Executive Officer Silvio Scerri, said: “Esplora is an important bridge between research and society, making science more accessible, relevant and engaging for people of all ages. By nurturing science literacy, curiosity, skills and a culture of innovation, Esplora is helping to equip Malta’s communities and future generations with the knowledge and confidence they need to shape the future.”
Senior Director of Esplora Mary Ann Cauchi, said: “As we enter our second decade, our ambition is to strengthen Esplora as Malta’s national platform for STEAM engagement, connecting science, research and creativity with people and communities across the Maltese islands.”
The anniversary marks a new chapter for the Centre, with increased emphasis on new interactive experiences, community engagement, accessibility and inclusion, opportunities for young researchers, stronger partnerships and greater connections between science, creativity and innovation.
