Electricity crackles, rockets whoosh, and a flash of light captures your shadow. Every visit to Esplora, Malta’s new science centre, will be full of surprises.
I first met the energetic team behind this new visitor attraction on a visit to Malta in spring 2013. Along with colleagues at KCA London, I was helping share skills to deliver the project’s vision – to open a state-of-the-art science centre in one of the country’s most fascinating historic sites, the former Royal Navy Military Hospital at Villa Bighi.
Since then, I’ve continued to work with the team on the explanatory panels for the galleries. The hands-on indoor spaces and outdoor park will be packed with exhibits, exploring everything from the colossal possibilities of space to the journey of a tiny blood cell through your body.
At Easter this year, I was thrilled that a return visit to Malta meant I could catch up with progress in person. Esplora’s historic site is undergoing an incredible transformation in its stunning setting by the sea. The restoration and redevelopment of the buildings to create unique exhibition spaces is in full swing.
On the day of our tour the planetarium structure had been manoeuvred into its spectacular position overlooking the Grand Harbour. It was amazing to see the team’s plans coming together and imagine visitors enjoying each part of the site.
Where else in the world will you be able to explore the most up-to-date science exhibits in a such a historic and beautiful place? I am looking forward to many future visits to enjoy all Esplora has to offer.
